This Friday we will be celebrating our school Feast Day, Our Lady, Star of the Sea which is an ancient title for Mary, Jesus’ mother. The words Star of the Sea are a translation of the Latin title Stella Maris. The title was used to emphasise Mary’s role as a sign of hope and as a guiding star. Under this title, Mary is believed to intercede as a guide and protector of those who travel or seek their livelihoods on the sea. It is clear why this title was chosen for our Milton Parish and school, standing proudly on the hill looking out to sea, and for the many fishing families of the area. Such a lovely vision for us, that Mary is guiding us and our school community in such uncertain times. We will be celebrating the day with fun activities to end the term.
We are hoping that Term 4 brings with it a relaxing of some of our current COVID restrictions. Last week our Senior students took part in a virtual camp organised by Mrs Peters, Mrs Wilson and Mr Harding. The students appear to have had a fantastic time with virtual tours of Canberra sights including the War Memorial and Electoral Commission. There was lots of laughter and fun had by all the students, a big thank you to our teachers for all their enormous efforts to make the camp such a success.
Preparations continue for our musical ‘Dragon Days’, the grand premiere has been postponed to next term in the hope that we can have singing in a choir and a real life audience. All of our St Mary’s shining stars are putting in enormous time and effort for the show, if we cannot perform live we will be making a movie of the performance, keep up the hard work and a big thanks to Mrs Cooper and Mrs Johnston for supporting our stars.
Thanks to our parents and carers who have been joining us for our Zoom Assemblies every second Friday. It is wonderful to have you with us to celebrate, albeit virtually. This week we will be changing the way our whole School Awards are listed in our newsletter. As you would be aware, we have previously listed the award winners prior to presenting awards at assemblies. From this week we will be presenting awards at assembly then publishing the names of winners in the newsletter the week after. This will alleviate the situation where some students are waiting three weeks to receive recognition for their efforts and achievements. If a student is receiving our major awards: 'Shining Star' or a ‘Pennant’, your child’s teacher will let you know prior to the assembly.
On a final note we have been fortunate to receive so many offers of help and kind donations after the bushfires. This week we were blessed to hear that the amazing local organisation ‘Treading Lightly’ have made a $5000 donation to our school. We are so very grateful for this enormous generosity from our community and look forward to putting this money towards supporting our children. Thank you, Treading Lightly!
I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful student vacation, taking time to rest and recuperate from such a busy term.
Yours in partnership
Laurinda Nelson
